Before routing production traffic to GPT-6 Astra through CometAPI, treat the official Astra guide as a checklist—not as proof that an OpenAI-compatible route is behaviorally interchangeable.
Start by pinning the exact route and model identifier. The guide names gpt-6-astra and an OpenAI-compatible /v1/responses endpoint, but your pre-production test should confirm that the selected CometAPI route accepts those values and the parameters your client sends. Record which reasoning settings, structured-output options, streaming mode, function calls, and tool-loop arguments are actually accepted. A request that is transported successfully is not the same as a feature that produces the semantics your application expects.
Then test the boundaries that can change a routing decision: context and output limits, input modalities, long-context thresholds, token accounting, and the current price rules. Compare cost per accepted task, not just token prices. The guide notes that long-context pricing can apply to the full request above its threshold, so measure representative workloads rather than importing a benchmark or assuming savings.
Use a failure matrix before enabling traffic. Include ambiguous inputs, missing data, tool failures, invalid reasoning values, unsupported sampling parameters, model or endpoint errors, rate limits, transient 5xx responses, retries, long-running requests, and every streaming completion state. For tools, validate argument schemas and the full loop—including how your application stops, retries, or asks for human correction. Bound retries and make duplicate side effects impossible or explicitly reconciled.
Finally, replay representative requests and measure latency, token use, correction time, and task acceptance. Promote traffic only when the exact route passes the checks and you have a documented fallback or rollback trigger. The decision is not “does the model name appear in the gateway documentation?” It is “does this CometAPI route, with this client contract and workload, behave well enough that the remaining failures are visible and bounded?”
